It is with deep sadness that we at the Scottish Football Partnership Trust mourn the passing of our Chair, Rod Petrie. On behalf of the Board, staff, and the many communities touched by his tireless work, I wish to pay tribute to a man whose influence on Scottish football will be felt for generations.
Rod’s contribution to the game in Scotland cannot be overstated. Throughout his career, he combined passion for football with an unwavering commitment to ensuring that the sport could be a force for good across the country. As Chair of the Trust, he provided leadership, vision, and integrity that guided us through pivotal moments. His belief in football’s power to inspire, unite, and transform lives was at the heart of every decision he made.
Under Rod’s stewardship, the Trust was able to extend its reach further than ever before. He championed investment in grassroots facilities, ensuring that young people—regardless of background—had the opportunity to play, develop, and fall in love with our national game. His dedication to inclusivity helped us support clubs, and community groups in every corner of Scotland.
Rod was not only a leader but also a mentor and friend to many of us. His wisdom, generosity of spirit, and quiet determination set the standard for how football governance could and should be done. Those who had the privilege of working alongside him will remember his kindness, his fairness, and his absolute commitment to doing what was right for the game.
The loss of Rod is deeply felt, but his legacy endures in the pitches, facilities, and communities that flourish today because of his leadership. More than that, his legacy lives on in the young people who now have opportunities to play and enjoy football in safe and supportive environments—opportunities that would not have existed without his vision.
On behalf of everyone at the Scottish Football Partnership Trust, I extend our heartfelt condolences to Rod’s family and loved ones. We share in their grief, but also in the pride of a life so fully dedicated to Scottish football.
Rod Petrie was a remarkable man, and we are honoured to have called him our Chair. His impact will never be forgotten.
