The award received by Queen of the South F.C. from the SFP’s Community Initiative will be used to assist in two projects, the first of which will involve residents from Headway in Dumfries, a group which supports people with brain injury where football will be used as the vehicle to provide Walking Football each week for these residents. Around 18 participants will take part in the programme which will be delivered by a Queen of the South Community coach at the club’s indoor arena. Each session will last two hours and the group will enjoy lunch together, provided by the club. It is anticipated that the project will raise awareness and understanding of brain injury and its consequences whilst promoting and assisting in rehabilitation and community reintegration. The second project for the walking football initiative will work in partnership with Alzheimer Scotland, where a lack of physical activity and social inclusion was identified within the Dumfries and Galloway dementia community. Around 26 people with dementia will take part in the twice monthly sessions which will be held over a 12 month period. Jim Thomson, Head of Youth & Community at the club said “The lasting benefit of these projects will see Queen of the South F.C. recognised locally and nationally for implementing and delivering such worthwhile projects to local community groups by using football as the medium to bring about positive change in the lives of individuals and communities.”
