Stirling Albion F.C. will use their Community Award from the SFP to help deliver a programme to 14 nurseries around the Stirling area to include physical activity and healthy eating. These nurseries will be selected in consultation with Active Stirling’s Early Years Co-ordinator and will combine physical activity/football sessions with some classroom based sessions involving healthy eating – helping children recognise healthy food from sugary snacks and focussing on improving children’s motor skills and to help them keep fit and active. The project will be delivered over two blocks, with each block lasting 6 weeks and it is hoped to target 700 children between the ages of 2 and 4 and will see a total of 168 hours of activity being delivered by the football club. Each session will include 30 minutes on healthy eating and the remaining 30 minutes will be spent in the gym hall on football fun sessions with a healthy food theme. Educating the parents of these young children will also feature as part of the project and the club aim to have available resources from Food Standards Scotland and NHS Forth Valley on nutrition and healthy eating. The programme will culminate in a family fun day at Forthbank Stadium where young families will be invited to enjoy a range of pre-match activities and perhaps attend a home game at the stadium thereafter. Andy Todd, the club’s Community Engagement Manager commented “We are sure that this project will help children recognise from a young age the importance of a healthy diet and regular exercise. The added benefit is that these young children and their families will engage with their local football club and we hope to leave a lasting legacy for the nurseries to develop over the coming years with the support of Stirling Albion Football Club.”
