The award from the SFP’s Community Initiative scheme will be utilised by Motherwell FC Community Trust in their impressive ‘Team for Me’ project which will use the power of football to support positive family relationships by giving dads, male carers and their sons the opportunity to play football. This one year project will work with fathers and carers and their children aged six years old in disadvantaged areas to promote relationships and as part of the project, the Trust will work with 200 family groups (around 400 individuals) living in areas of deprivation. Motherwell FC Community Trust will deliver twice weekly coaching sessions to these family groups and it is hoped that going forward, the father/male carer, after working with the Trust’s coaches, will adopt the role of “coach” himself to his young son and could even go on to obtain the Scottish FA 1.1 Early Touches qualification enabling him to coach his son outside the project. In addition, the Community Trust will support the boy into its player pathway through participation centres and community teams, giving the father/carer an opportunity to volunteer as a coach within this set up also. The programme will encourage the ethos of positive attitudes and behaviours and will focus on the importance of effort, learning, psychological development, building confidence and developing responsible individuals. Charlie Bennett, the General Manager of the Community Trust said “I am delighted that this new ‘Team for Me’ project will result in a number of positive outcomes for the local community. We hope to see fathers/male carers develop rewarding relationships with their young sons and become positive role models in their lives. The multi-dimensional aspects of the programme will also see improved physical activity for both fathers and sons, improving and building confidence, self-esteem and improving their general health and wellbeing. In addition, the project will encourage more young children to become part of the structured player pathway with the ultimate aim of becoming a registered player within the club’s community teams and will produce a more skilled volunteer workforce coaching within the Motherwell FC Community Trust player pathway.”
