The funding from the SFP Community Initiative will allow Stranraer F.C. to provide football related projects to a wide range of groups from within the local community, ranging from 2-4 year olds at nursery to children in Primaries 1 to 3 and disability groups from the local area. The “mini-kickers” project will be delivered to five local nurseries and will see coaches using football as the tool to introduce physical literacy and ABC’s to over 200 children in a 60 minute session which will include fun football and diet and nutrition. The Schools Football project will offer football sessions to around 700 primary school children in the Stranraer and Wigtownshire area during class-time and within the school holidays and will provide these young kids with football activity, improved health and an opportunity to be closer connected to the local professional football club. Similarly, the Disability Groups project will encourage active learning and introduce sport in a fun way to over 100 participants and it is hoped that this will increase their confidence and allow closer links to be forged with the club. David McMillan from the club said “We are excited about these new community initiatives which will help build strong relationships and raise the club’s awareness within the local community. We are delighted to be engaging with the town’s young people and hope the long-term benefits will provide these youngsters with a more active lifestyle and a pathway to playing and enjoying football as they move into adulthood.”
